With tirerack, if they think that you need new lugs, they are supplied free.

Bent wheel issues:

Number of spokes does not matter as the inside rim is not supported and thats where it will move the most when pot holed. So more spokes cannot solve the problem.

Material, most inexpensive wheels are simple cast wheels which are not going to be the strongest. The only way for more strength with a soft cast wheel is more metal... a heavier wheel.

Softer tire pressures allow for easier wheel damage.

Soft shocks do not absorb enough energy before the strut bottoms out on the bump stop. When the strut bottoms out, the tire collapses to the rim and the only other thing that will give is the bump stop or the vehilce lifts. The vehicle chassis cannot move much is these very fast events and the bump stop does not move much. Something has to give and the spring is not out of the picture. So the wheel bends. Much of this is a consequence of the very limited vertical travel in the NGs and 9-3s. A stiffer shock will transmit a higher force to the chassis to lift it and this will allow for the chassis to move a bit out of the way. And the shock can absorb more of the impact before the wheel takes the final hit. By cutting the bump stop short when doing the struts, the shock travel is increased and the newer stiffer shocks not have more time and travle to transfer impuse to the the chassis. So things are better if the vertical travel in increased.

Speed: At higher speeds, a nasty pothole will cause damage and better shocks cannot in the very short time frames of these events get the chassis to move up. So in some situations, with a small vertical travel in the suspension, the wheel just cannot get out of the way and something has to get damaged.

Rim size. 16" Viking wheels get bent too. A taller side wall is part of the vertical suspension travel. Going to 17" wheels, just loosing 1/2 of sidewall, seems to have taken the problem from marginal to really bad.
