I've heard different stories at different times. If you call the dealer & ask what it costs to read the code. Or go to the autoparts-chainstore of your choice. Probably most of them read the code for free. My other post is just so you don't take any real action until you come back here for a reality check with the code number.
Now for the rest of the story...
Anybody can plug in a code reader & tell you the number. For less than $200 you can buy your own & do this for friends & neighbors. Codes up to P0999 are supposed to be the same for all carmakers. Any higher # doesn't mean the same thing for a Ford as it does for a Chevy. Whatever the number is, the REAL trick is knowing what's going on & figuring out what's broken.
Someone on here got their code read at some store, I think they told her it was her fuel pump. So she went to an indie mechanic & just asked them to replace the pump. They did... When she posted here with the trouble code number someone (Anders??) said it was really something else. Maybe that error number means fuel pump for Ford, but not for Saab.
I went in with our '98 Accord. They read P1457 & told me it was a loose gas cap. From a Honda shop manual I found what it REALLY meant, & I had to buy a $50 valve for the EVAP canister. Now a '98 Accord isn't a strange & rare car, so if they can't get that right, ????
