Well, after a few weeks of poor (diminished) boost, declining gas mileage, hesitation during some acceleration (especially in fourth and fifth), and some surging during normal driving, I started to read the posts here about the mass airflow sensor (MAF) and the experiences of others--especially fellow Viggen owners. I had no CEL on, but based on what others have said, I went ahead and ordered a new MAF from a dealer for $179. I pulled out the old one and checked for dirt and/or residue--nothing, clean as could be and I have been running a K&N for almost 30K now (I don't believe the oil residue theory anyway). I originally planned on cleaning it with plastic-safe electronic cleaner, but a few folks tried that to no avail. I just went ahead and installed the new MAF. Well, after one run, all of the boost is back, nearly into the red in second (I don't think I have ever seen that before). Near red in third thru fifth, much more responsive, everything just happens faster! Simple to install, no instruments to hook up to. The tricky part was the electrical connector, which requires you to pull out the red section as you wiggle off the connector--be careful. Keep everything clean during installation and be careful when you pull out the old one so that you can re-use the rubber gasket seal (no screwdrivers allowed!)
My Viggen has 62K, just went thru 60K service and the dealer said no problems, but that was about three months ago. The boost problems didn't start until about a month ago. I think that the MAF just can quit, and before something really bad happens, I just replaced it. The car is a CPO and I didn't mind shelling out some money for my boost back and some piece of mind. Maybe the dealer would have caught it under CPO, but I bet I would have had to suggest it to them with no CEL on and codes to read. So if in doubt, change that MAF!!!! Thanks to all who post here, you guys and gals are the best and have lead me in the right direction on several occasions. '00 Viggen 5-door (w/CPO, 62K): stock engine with a K&N, rear 22mm ARB, steering clamp and brace, soon to have a 6pt. subframe brace, poly transmission mount. IMHO, keep the engine close to stock, fix the "torque steer" problems, run good tires, and enjoy the car with stock power and improved suspension. When out of warranty and bored, slap on a stage III, fix up the brakes, springs and struts and watch for cops!
