What year is your 9-3? I have a '99, so I can give instructions for the older generation ('99-'02 + '03 convertible):
I do my oil changes on ramps, and it's pretty easy. Filter is easy to reach. Have a spare washer around, but you won't need to change it every time...maybe every three times. You can get it from a dealer...that's probably the cheapest way if you're not buying anything else at the same time. Otherwise, eEuroparts.com, free shipping if you're over $39 on your order.
The plug is 13mm, and yes, you should use a six-sided socket to avoid stripping it. If you're planning to work on your Saab at all, you should invest in a set of metric sockets from 8mm to 16mm, at least.
If you have a 9-3SS, then things are different. You'll need a 15mm socket. You'll also need to make sure you have exactly the right oil (must meet GM-LL-A-025 spec). AFAIK, the only oils you can use are Mobil1 0W40 and Saab full synth 0W30. And you'll need 6 qts of it.
