Hey,
Saabs have long gearing, a nice final drive, and I like it. cruise down the highway in a 5spd bmw and you'll be turning 3000-3500rpm at 70mph. that is what the turbo is for, it really doesn't matter what gear your in since it will push you into the seat. the long gearing makes it better. 6spds are more or less useless in turbos unless it's 0.5:1 6th (second overdrive) with the same final drive.
Otherwise, a lot of cars can cruise in 5th at 35mph. 35 in a saab is just about lugging in 4th unless you have an smbc. 1st in saabs is already long for an manual tranny.
Now I do wish that reverse was a lot shorter. going backward up our driveway into the garage means slipping the clutch the whole way. same with backing into any parking spot.
i do agree that the torque limits are crap and impossible to disable cheaply except for the smbc (who'd imagine they'd compare crank speed to wheel speed to determine the gear ratio).
have a good one,
f
