Any aftermarket shift knob other than a saab specific one would mean that you would lose your reverse lockout feature. It can be done, just need to spec the diameter of the shifter and reconfigure the shift boot attachment.
There is a way to remove the shift knob non-destructively but it isn't completey easy. Look at the information on the MP Performance Website regarding the short shifter to see their procedure for removing the shift knob off of the shifter. This would be the long way to go at it but at least there are pictures. The shorter way would be to wrap the knob with a strap wrench very tight and turn it to break it loose from the splines. Once it is off the shifter, you can then use some thin gauge metal or plastic to remove the knob from the reverse lockout and boot. I used thin feeler guages to slip it out but it takes a lot of finesse.
The stock leather shift knob requires some care to remove without destroying it because the outer material is much softer than the center plastic core held on by glue. If the strap wrench isn't tight enough, the outer leather and padding can come loose from the center plastic core when you apply pressure. The wood shift knob doesn't have this problem and can be torqued on pretty hard. There is question about whether the stock one is just truly pressure fit or if there is some epoxy used. On mine, being the wooden one that I removed, there was definitely epoxy used. I think the only aftermarket saab specific shift knob I've seen is from Abbott Racing. I am not sure if that knob incorporates the reverse lockout feature or not.
