First, if you're not halfway mechanically-minded, try to get a Certified Pre-Owned from Saab.

There's a bunch and I'm sure I've missed a bunch too:

Make sure you do the normal stuff like: write down the VIN and do a CarFax, go to a dealer and ask a friendly counterperson to pull the maintenance records for you, check the CV boots for tears, drive in a slow broadening circle both ways in a big parking lot and listen for clicks, look at the pads/rotors, go in the morning and get someone else to start the car for you while you watch the tailpipe then run to listen at the engine, check that all the switches do what they're supposed to do, make sure the seats get hot if they're supposed to, don't forget the sunroof, look at the Info. Display and Climate control if it has-it to see if all the pixels are there--there are only two kinds of displays on these cars, one that has failed and one that is in the process of failing, check to see if the tranny has had the updated 2002 snap ring mod, ask if the head has been re-torqued (look around the block for signs of oil leaks), crawl underneath and look for any oil tracers or oily mud build-up, if you can, get a TechII hooked up and check for any recent error codes, get the tech to watch for anything out of the oridinary while its idling, pull a spark plug if you can--make sure it's not black or white and corroded, look at the oil and smell it, turn-off the AC and back on to listen to the compressor on/off, check the fluid levels, check tire tread wear, take hands off the steering wheel while on a flat road, do same while braking, watch boost gauge while accelerating--it should go to the line between red and yellow and maintain as long as your foot is on the pedal (a 3rd gear pull will top-out at 90), make sure all the lights go lit while the ignition is in ACC position before starting (especially the check engine light), check that head, fog, and signal lamps aren't cracked, turn off the traction control and do a burnout for fun, do a 3rd gear pull with the traction control off and try to see if the clutch is slipping or if there is any noticible loss of power when it feels like it should be pulling hard, look for any water spots/rings and dampness on the headliner and in the footwells under the carpets, start an up and downshift slowly between wrong gears at inappropriate speeds and listen for any bad whining (don't fully engage, but give the syncros a workout), kick the tires for fun, and well, and any other basic car stuff.

Good luck!
