I doubt anything got into the cylinder and hit the sparkplug. It would have trashed your valves and probably the cylinder walls at the same time.
Detonation, maybe? Or just bad spark plugs to begin with?
If the car seized suddenly, could this have stripped the balance shaft?
My guess: something is causing your car to knock. The computer has been compensating by restricting your boost (hence the recent problems). But some knocking has still been occurring. This damaged your spark plugs and put a lot of stress on your engine. When it finally cut, it stripped the balance shaft.
Only a guess, though. If it were that, I'd certainly pull the engine and look it over carefully at the very least. If you're going to replace it, you have to pull it anyway, so you may as well pull it and look it over. See what the mechanic says after that.
Sorry about the engine.
