ELCD or Carbon Cannister Purge Valve

For six months my wife's 1999 Saab 9 3 would idle sporadically and often die at stops. When driving on the road it worked fine but whenever we'd stop we worried it would die. This seemed to be more likely after filling the tank with gas. We have no dealers within 3 hours but have locals who work on Saabs. After repeated trys without success with our mechanics locally, I phoned a friend in another state who is a "Saab expert". After asking me a few questions he suggested I have the mechanic check the ELCD valve. Our mechanic was a bit defensive and claimed that he had already checked it. After more visits to him with no luck I tried the other local "specialist". Turns out neither place could fix this or show me where this elusive valve was! Long story short, I ended up asking the long distance mechanic friend again. He talked me to the location of the part over the phone and told me to disconnect it and plug the line that went to the engine with a golf tee. If the car quit stalling at stops, then this was probably the culprit and we could replace the part (ELCD or Carbon Cannister Purge Valve, seems there are many names for it) I used a chop stick to plug the intake(I don't golf). The car ran perfectly for three days driving. After the first day I ordered the part and when it came in installed it (I am no mechanic!). After 4 more days of the car idling perfectly at stops we are still surprised when it stays running! Still conditioned to having it die. I hope this is useful for someone else.
