On all the cars I do now I set my torque wrench when releasing the bolts.
Most bolts has an average release torque of about 50Nm (37 lbf-ft), some may go up to 60Nm and some comes out with 40Nm.
If you do the math (which I know you do), you tighten to 60Nm and then 90 degree more which most likely should bring the torque up around the 100to 120 Nm at least, and then you can release them with less than the initial second stage torque, that's just plain wrong.
The bolt closest to the battery is always the loosest one and the last car I could take it by hand.
It's no doubt in my mind that something went terribly wrong for years at the engine plant.
It might be the crappy early bolts that I ran into in 2001 that just keeps stretching and stretching, but then again, one car had 11K miles and they were already loose.
