This is not normal. There shouldn't be any smells or smoke that you don't see in every other car.
Can you tell what's burning? It's hard to describe the different smells in text, but burning oil is acrid, coolant is like sweet steam, and other fluids smell more chemical. Oil will have a bluish smoke, coolant is white (steam).
If it's coming from the block itself, it could be oil or coolant. These cars sometimes have leaky head gaskets, which can often be repaired simply by tightening a few bolts. Oil and/or coolant could be leaking at the head gasket.
Stuff in front of the block could be coolant or power steering fluid, or possibly oil as well. The turbo is below and in front of the block. There is oil and coolant flowing through it, so either of those could be leaking there. The power steering pump is at the top, front, right (ie, passenger's side) of the block. Pressure lines go down and then to the right from there.
Keep checking your fluids...coolant, oil, and power steering. Maybe transmission, too...is it manual or automatic? Look for drips where the car is parked: colors vary from car to car, but manual tranny fluid is often red, steering green, coolant can be blue or orange (look at your reservoir), and oil is dark brown to black.
Good luck,
Matt
