If we stick with 2001 and up keys they consist of 4 pieces, key shank with immobilizer chip embedded, remote control buttons, battery and rear plastic cover.
You can buy the key shank cut to your car and move the remote buttons, battery and plastic cover from a salvage car over to the newly cut key.
Then you use your original key in the ignition lock to "open up" the TWICE computer so that you can program the newly assemlied key.
This is if you still have one working key.
If you buy a used (or even a new) TWICE computer with a matched key/immobilizer chip, you need to remove the antenna ring around the ignition key, hold the antenna ring and the salvage key together as far away from the orginal key or new key cut to your car (which is used to turn the ignition on).
Now the TWICE computer senses the matching key/chip that you hold close to the antenna ring but you use another key to turn the ignition on. This way you can continue the programming and program the key sitting in the ignition to the TWICE computer.
When that is done you can throw away the key/chip that came with the TWICE and install the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder and use the newly coded key to program more keys.
STILL! You need a Tech 2 scanner to do all this so it's nothing that a handy car owner can do on his/her own.
I probably have confused more than helped now, but it's kind of tricky to explain and even more to perform.
