In deep snow, the higher pessure gives you better traction. In PACKED snow or ICE, a lower pressure will give you better traction. I realize that this is counterintuitive, but it is true.
Considering that my tires are fantastic on packed snow and ice, I opt for equal pressure in the rear vs front in order to keep the back end from spinning around in the deeper snow. A lot of research went into that decision.
ps. I have Nokian Hakka2 studded. My wife's 9-5 has the Gislaved Nordfrost 2 non-studded. The Gislaved may have a slight edge in the deep snow but I really should have studded them. Ice scares me more than anything.
I've also had;
Michelin Artic Alpin: Good on dry roads and icy roads. Not great in deep snow and not great for treadwear. Not a bad choice if ice scares you and you don't want studs.
Firestone Winterfire: What?!? Yeah, you heard me. They were great in the deep snow and the tread lasted a long time but they were very poor on the ice without studs.
