The e-Codes are much more even in the light spread on the road in low beam. No hot spots like before. I actually use the fogs less due to the superior e-Code right shoulder kickup. That kickup extends the effective range. Lets you see the beasties better. High beam is a broader spread than non e-Codes. Glare is far less on properly adjusted e-Codes. I have used e-Codes since about 1978. First Cibie and Hella conversions and later the actual Euro-lights. Do a search for Daniel Stern Lighting for more info.
Protection... pro and con. Be careful of the stick-on acylic sheets. The thinker ones can cause the lenses to overheat and crack. Additionally as they stick to the glass, tehy merely keep it from shattering, they provide minimal cushioning.
VW used to have these nice clear plastic shields that snapped over the Jetta II headlights. They stood off the lenses about 3/8 inch. Allowed cooling air and a rock hit never even touched the lense itself. They were not noticable unless you looked close. Unfortunately, I have never seen these for any other composite headlights.
