Some have worn out struts at those miles. Many go well beyond that and can't tell when they are shot.
If you make a rapid lane change at expressway speeds and the steering acts silly as you transition into the next lane, the shocks may be gone. This is what can happen, the body gets pitched to one side and then the other. If the shocks do not dampen that motion, the rapid body roll transistions effect the steering geometry and it feels wrong. If you then added an SAS type sway bar that steering artifact would go away and confirm that the problem is body roll induced steering artifacts. You can't really tell with these vehicles, if the shock are shot, by bouncing the vehilce at the bumpers etc.
It is unwise to replace the front struts and not replace the upper mounts, as the mounts may be gone or not survive the second strut. So you would be faced with a second strut removal to replace the mount and the labor costs outweigh the cost of new mounts from the get-go.
Noises described: Any signs of oil loss from the struts. There are other sources of suspenstion noise other than strut issues. A commoon complaint. Could be loose subframe bolts allowing for creaking? Harsh? Badly worn shocks will bottom out or 'hammer' on the bump stops... now that is really harsh!
