I was doing some errands around town last Saturday, when all of a sudden the car ('01 9-3 SE) went into Limp Home Mode while I was driving. I was able to get it into a parking spot (after driving around looking for a spot in the downtown area). I figured it would start right back up since there weren't any other symptoms, but it wouldn't start. I would get some of the dash and console lights, and it would make a rapid "click click click" sound as if it were trying to turnover but was unable to.
I went into a store, came back 5 minutes later and called AAA to have a jump/tow. However, the car started fine. It was fine all day Saturday, and all day Sunday. But Sunday night the same thing happened, after all of the interior lights got really dim. And this time the car died on me completely as I was waiting to get into my driveway. AAA came and jumped it for me and I got into my driveway and let it run for 30 minutes - no problems.
Monday, I got a new battery. I thought everything was fine. Didn't drive it at all Tuesday. Wednesday morning, it starts up fine. I have it back in the shop to re-balance the tires, and in doing so they drive it a lot. I pick it up at noon, and I drive it a lot to, stopping one place. And on my way back, wham... LHM mode again while driving. I got into another parking spot and this time it died as soon as I put it into Park. And I called AAA. After about 10 mintues I got it started, but used it mainly for warmth as I waited about an hour for AAA. It was running fine this whole time.
SO...
It appears to happen at random, for no real reason. And it doesn't last long. It just goes into LHM and dies or is unable to restart right away, but waiting a few minutes I'm able to start it and it runs fine. A little sluggish perhaps, but running fine.
I got the alternator replaced in July, but they're going to try replacing it again. The symptoms are different then what was happening in July (it would go into LHM if I went over 55 or so), so I'm not sold on that being the cause.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm driving a Buick LeSabre while it's in the shop, and I can't wait to get my car back!!
Thanks!
