Timing belt and its associated idler or tension wheels!!! If you loose that belt, the pistons will eat valves.

Timing belt replacement can be quite difficult and technical, might require special tools etc. Can be quite expensive at a dealer which can may you feel like your diesel economy savings are going into dealer pockets, not yours.

Glow plugs do not last forever, but these are easy to replace.

Diesel engines have very specific coolant requirements, do not ignore this.

Check to see if there is an updated tensioner, have seen that these evolved on some vehicles and its dangerous not to update.

You will want to know that the engine has had the proper lube oils used in the past, must be specific diesel engine oils, not just any oil.

Diesel engines do not have throttles, it is full air flow all the time and constant boost when crusing, so the engine air filter has to filter a lot more air than a gas engine's air filter, so these fitlers are important and replacement should not be ignored.

If the air intake has fine mesh metal screen before the air filter, aka snow screen, then these need to be removed and cleaned, some owners eliminate these as they restrict so easily and limit power.

Diesel fuel conditioners should be used to remove/dispurse water from time to time, in markets where the fuel is nasty, these will also boost cetane.

Fuel filters should be replaced as recommended.

Some engines with EGR have the intakes foul up with a combo of engine blow by oil vapor and exhaust soot, the intake and manifold can be come quite restricted. With VW TDIs its a full day of work, with perhaps an overhight soak. The deposits can very very tough to remove. With a dealer doing the work, new parts can be cheaper than mechanic shop time for the cleaning. The intake manifold feed pipe can be removed and the area where the EGR soot enters can be examined with a flashlight. But I have no experience with the Saab diesels.

Some diesel engines are hard on engine mounts, enquire about that issue and inspection if advisable.

Talk to an experienced mechanic who has worked on these engines to see if there are things that he suggests that you pay for to be inspected or adjusted.
