A problem with a CVJ can create vibes if it allows the shaft center of gravity to go off center. And worn shocks can allow the suspsion to dance in sympathy where tigher shocks would act otherwise.
Drive shaft problems are more common than the problem in the trany and cheaper (a relative term) and easier to fix. As it is emotionally and finacially impractical to tackle a situation from the prospect of the worst case, it is good to explore the simpler and cheaper possibilties and through thje process of elimiation see whats left.
It might be as the mechanic states, but if that work is done and the problem persists, then you are really much worse off, nothing gained except finacial injury, and back to square one.
So inspect engine mounts, drive shafts, wheel bearings, ball joints for good measure. Others may post some other possibilities to consider. Perform the scrub test. Engine off, hood up, turn the steering wheel left and right to the point where the tire wants to scrub on the pavement, but not beyond that point. Watch the tops of the upper moints and note how much squirming motion there is. Anything feel or sound odd? If you have an assistant, you can get under and watch/feel/hear for things in the ball joings, tie-rod ends, or perhaps wheel bearings. Clean dry solid pavement is needed to develop higher forces.
