Mr. Paine, you are the mechanic. I should have thought of it too. Placing the vice grips tightly on the bottom segment and hitting upwards on them with the hammer pulled out the old sleave just fine, though with considerablely more tapping and force than anyone has described in past posts. Teeth on the nylon "rack" were toward the front of the car. The new sleave was just as reluctant to go in as was its predecessor to come out. However, the reverse technique can successfully overcome that, using the hammer again against the vice grips again, though this time with the vice grips not touching the antenna segment. The 17 mm nut can work against the new sleave, much as a slide hammer, since the flange on the new sleave is designed to be compressed by the nut and the nut is wider than the antenna segments. First place cloth on the nut to protect its anodized finish from the vice grips. Then loosely surrounding the bottom tube of the new antenna with the vice grips jaws such that they do not touch the antenna segment. Next tap the side of the vice grips handle with the hammer such that the force is directed against the nut top and thereby against the sleave.
So, now I find out if Prestone Silicone Lubricant is satisfactory. As to chemical extraction solutions offered, the old nylon rack had considerable penetrating oil on it from my attempts to loosen the old sleave. I am not so sure that anything more than a single drop should be used in such an effort.
Thank you again, Mr. Paine
