Handling........and a little more.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: SS vs SE, Tom, Thu, 15 Jul 2004 07:36:08 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You only use max acceleration occasionally, but the vastly improved ride and handling will be there all the time. The all aluminum engine, hood and suspension, turbo on the back, results in drastically improved weight ditrubution. That and the ReAxe passive rear wheel steering that inhibits understeer under hard cornering by towing out the outside rear wheel 1.5mm or so make a huge difference you feel in every corner.
The rear suspension has also been dramatically improved, not only with the ReAxe, but by emliminating the heavy, non compliant twist beam axle and replaceing it with a multi link system.
And because the suspension components, all the cross arms, uprights, hub carriers and even the brake calipers are now aluminum, resulting in vastly lower unsprung weight, the ride is many, many times better. A Viggen would rattle your filling loose, now you can get the 17's and sport chassis in the Aero and the ride is still better than any old style 9-3SE. A 9-3SS is one of the few cars that won't make you suffer with 17" wheels.
So nimbler handling with higher limits and a better ride. And torque steer, a bugaboo of higher out put 9-3s, is a thing of the past.
The engines are smoother all over and rev sweeter, particualarly the 210hp Arc and Aero with their hotter cams, but the torque doesn't hit as hard or as low. The shift linkage is better. The brakes are better with the latest in electronic brake force distribution (EBD) front to rear, cornering brake control (CBC) side to side, mechanical brake assist (MBC) for improved brake feel. There's more room, electronic stability program (ESP) is standard. There's dual force intelligent front air bags, head curtain airbags from the A piller to the C pillar and the torso and thorax airbags are retained in the outside of the seats.
The chassis is about 3 times as stiff allowing the suspension to do it's job better and hatch rattels are history.
Did I miss anything?
