There has been post about piston failures in viggens in almost every single MY they where made both stock and modified. Use searh to look up the latest "large" topic about the issue. Even though pistons fail in some viggens does not mean that the problem will hit you. I beileve there are only two viggen owners on this board who have cracked a piston, philip Hs and Steve. In Finaland we have only 20 or so viggens and non have had problems. Over the ocean in Sweden there have been some insidents to both viggens and 9-5 aeros, about 20-40 all to gether.
I myself drive a stage III+ MY00 viggen 290ps/510Nm and it has lasted for a year now. How ever I cant say it will hold for ever, but I'm not to worried about my pistons at the moment.
Just keep in mind the following if you buy an older viggen 99-01, crancase vent needs to be upgraded!!!! this is very small procedure but it is important. Also change your oil more often if car is tuned.
My99 viggens had the TWR software which was then changed to MY00->. Dont know about the viggen in US, but many cars in sweden got the new SW during regular maintenace.
Also if you buy an upgrade go to a dyno and see if everything is ok with A/F. My car ran very very lean with first SW that I previously had in my car.
