The rubber seems to fail in the OEM mounts while the OEM bearings are still in good shape.
The strut shaft nut holds everything in place. It also resists the spring force when the vehicle is jacked up and the strut is maxed out on extension. To remove that nut, you must first compress the spring. So, no easy way out.
When the wheels are on the ground, the mount transfers the spring force to the fender structure. So the forces on the shock shaft and rubber mount when driving are:
1) The hydraulic forces created when the wheel is moving over bumps etc.
2) Lateral reaction forces to resist corning forces as well as acceleration and braking.
The thrust bearing sees the static road loads, but not the damper hydraulic dynamic loads.
