2001 is a pretty solid year, I think. Check that there is no sign of leaking oil around the head gasket. Check the heater controls (temp and location) if they are manual to make sure they move smoothly and freely. Both of those are mostly 1999 issues, though. Listen for any unusual noises when driving the car. Make sure that on a cold start, there is no blue smoke coming from the exhaust. If the SID is missing pixels, have it replaced.
There will be creaking noises coming from the suspension in cold weather. You can pursue this with your dealer if you want, and some have tried various fixes with moderate success, but most of us just ignore the noise.
Good luck. By the way, the base model is not called an "S"; it is just a base model (nomenclature changed since the days of the 900S/900SE). No shame in the base model, though...it's pretty quick.
