Fault Symptoms, Throttle Open When Pedal Is Released

Throttle Open when Pedal is Released.
Fault symptoms
Engine stalls.
CHECK ENGINE.
Idling speed incorrect.
Cruise control not working.
On-Board Diagnostics
Type of diagnosis:
Continuous. But interrupted when fault criteria fulfilled and will not restart until next driving cycle.
Enable criteria:
Engine running.
Fault criteria:
Throttle position exceeds the maximum permissible with pedal released.
Dependents:
None.
System reaction to a fault:
Fuel shut-off. Main relay turned off. Throttle control in limp-home mode. Limp-home solenoid will activate 5 times in succession each time the ignition is turned on until the fault is rectified and the trouble codes cleared.
OK report:
Accelerator pedal has been depressed at some time and then fully released. 120 s has expired since then without fault criteria being fulfilled.
Fault handling: See: Fault Diagnosis, General\Fault Handling III, Other Emission-Related Component & Function
CHECK ENGINE goes on immediately and can be turned off only by clearing the trouble codes.
Diagnostic help
The throttle has been open despite the driver releasing the accelerator pedal. A mechanical fault is preventing the throttle from closing.
Checking the wiring
Jiggle the wiring harness at several points and in different directions to detect intermittent breaks and short circuits. Observe the multimeter, diagnostic tool or test lamp during the check.

Checking The Mechanical Operation Of The Flap
Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
Wait for 10 seconds .
Open and close the flap valve by hand.
The flap valve should not bind in any position.
The spring should return the flap valve to the stop screw.
No external objects, hoses, cables, etc. must obstruct the movement of the throttle arm.
Is the function correct?
NO - Continue with Checking The Mechanical Operation Of The Flap
YES - See: Checking the Control Module's Flap Motor Output
Can The Fault Be Rectified Without Changing The Throttle Body?
NO - See: Changing Components
YES - See: Diagnostic Procedure

Checking The Control Module's Flap Motor Output
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Activate: Throttle Motor PWM Test (30s)
Follow the diagnostic tool's instructions.
The test lamp should alternate between red and green.
Checking The Wiring Harness
Jiggle the leads and in-line connectors at several places and in different directions to reveal intermittent breaks and short circuits in the wiring harness. Observe the multimeter, test lamp or diagnostic tool while doing this.
Is the function correct?
NO - See: Rectifying the Lead
YES - See: Changing Components

Changing Components
Change - Throttle body
Next time the ignition switch is turned to the ON position the limp-home solenoid will be activated. The flap valve will then assume the mechanical limp-home position. It is therefore important to reset the limp-home mechanism AFTER all diagnostic trouble codes have been cleared.
After performing this procedure See: Resetting the Limp-Home Mechanism

Resetting The Limp-Home Mechanism
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Clear diagnostic trouble codes: Trionic
Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
Wait for 10 seconds .
Reset the limp-home mechanism as described in the section headed 'Adjustment and replacement'.
After performing this procedure See: Implementation of Driving Cycle

Implementation Of Driving Cycle
Clear diagnostic trouble codes
Unplug the connector:
EVAP canister purge valve (321)
Connect test lamp 86 11 857 to the female connector.
Start the engine and let it idle until the coolant temperature exceeds 60 °C .
Read value: Purge Adaptation (Trionic).
State what the diagnostic tool shows:
-15% to +15% See: Performing A Driving Cycle
Other value See: Fault Not Rectified - I

Programing A Driving Cycle
Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
Plug in the connector:
EVAP canister purge valve
Drive the car between 60 and 100 km/h with constant accelerator depression.
Read value: Multiplicative Adaptation (Trionic).
Wait until the value changes. Another speed can then be selected immediately or come to a stop if desired. The engine must not be turned off, however.
The reading will eventually stabilize.
State what the diagnostic tool shows:
-15% to +15% See: Remedial Action OK
Other value See: Fault Not Rectified - II

Rectifying The Lead
One of the two throttle-valve motor leads is defective. Either the lead between pin 24 of the control module and pin 10 of the female connector, or the lead between pin 48 of the control module and pin 5 of the female connector.
After performing this procedure See: Resetting the Limp-Home Mechanism
