A/C out...what to check?

My 2000 9-3 (base model) was cruising along fine on the highway with the A/C going Sunday afternoon when I thought I heard a strange sound from the engine compartment. I was listening to a CD at the time, so I could not hear it distinctly, and about the time I went to mute the CD, I heard a "clunk" as if something hit the underside of the car. Thinking it might have just been a rock, I drove a little farther, listened, and watched the dash lights/gauges to see if anything was abnormal. Then I remembered the noise that started it all and wondered if something had come off in the engine compartment. After a while I got off the highway and at the next stop light I tunred off the A/C and fan and listened. Everything sounded normal. When I started up again, I turned on the A/C and fan, but noticed that I was not getting cool air.
When I got home, I opened the hood and looked to see if I could see anything loose or disconnected. I also looked under the car to see if I could see a leak of any kind. I didn't see anything at first, but then I noticed some liquid to the left side of the radiator (when facing the car from the front). Isn't the A/C compressor in that corner of the engine compartment about half way down? I stuck a stick down to retrieve a little of the liquid. It had no odor that I could tell, but it had an oily consistency. So, I will make an appointment to get it checked as soon as I can, but did I perhaps blow a hose on the compressor? Could that have been the clunk I heard?
