If they have taken it as far as to that the 8mm hex is rounded, the next thing that I would do is to use an air hammer and a flat bladed chisel.
BIG, HUGE CAUTION!!!!!!!
This is not for the heavy handed gorilla type mechanic to perform.
You put the chisel blade against the flat portion of the drain plug and give it a couple of whacks with the air hammer so that the chisel digs into the drain plug. This usually makes the plug come loose.
Air hammer is a much better choice than using a hammer and hand held chisel. This is due to that the air hammer delivers many short fast blows instead of a long heavy one from a hammer.
But as I said, if a mechanic that doesn't care would perform an action like this he might slip and run the chisel through the aluminum transmission casing.
