I don't agree with the tech's guesses.
Check the BPV VAC line at the TB and BPV for splits. Check the BPV for diaphragm leaks. Apply suction by mouth. If it leaks your boost would be lower, but this would not cause fuel cuts.
You have a T5 1999
If you have a T5 and have fuel cuts, the boost would have to be around 40% thru the red for this to happen. Whats your reading? If high and you don't have a MBC, the wastegate or BPC or hoses might be at fault.
If you have the wrong plugs they can foul and miss/buck at higher boost levels. If so they will be black and getting worse with missed firing.
A bad DI might have problems at higher boost levels. Miles on DI?
Note that repeated missing will harm the CAT. A fouled cat could be restrictive and then your Tech's guesses might make sense.
Exhaust upgrades will be from the flex pipe back unless you get a larger downpipe system as well.
The intake changes will not cause the problems that you have.
