First, let me say, I love ragtops. I'm only 39, but my first car was a black '64 Chevy Malibu 'vert with a slick red interior. Looked like the Batmobile! Sunroofs just can't compare to that full-on feeling of being exposed to the sun and wind. It's great.
But, and you knew this was coming, I'd think twice about having an infant in a convertible. I was a reporter in South Florida for about 7 years and, like most rookies, I had to cover the cops beat. Fires, shootings, accidents -- the whole lot. Paramedics and firefighters agreed that convertibles were good only because the accident victims didn't have to be cut out of the car. Unfortunately, without the structural rigidity added by a roof, those folks were often pretty bad off. The folks thrown from the wrecks, or caught in a rollover, fared even worse.
If you insist on having a convertible, trade in your 99 on a new 2004 9-3 with the automatic roll bars that pop up in an accident. Note: I'm not saying go buy a Ford Windstar, which is what I did when my oldest, now 10, was an infant. I'd just think twice, then three times, about strapping any of my three kids into a convertible as an infant, even one so solidly built as a Saab.
I'll climb off the soap box now....
