I'll double up on the previous poster's comment on
the heating control. Failure occurs at the heat level
(far right hand) rheostat.
I had this repaired once, then twice, when I had understood
the whole unit to have been replaced. Turns out the second
repair was just that and not a complete replacement as it
should have been. The design had since been modified.
After the warranty expired, GM absorbed half the cost of
the part; me the other half (CDN$253). The dealership
absorbed the labor.
If this is the only major expense on a 5 year car,
that's reasonable IMO, but I still feel GM ought to have
had a policy on that heater control box. I mentioned to the
dealer on the occasion of the second repair that Saabnet
people were having replacements done on second failures
after a single attempt at repair and their response was DUH?
WHO? WHAT? SAABNET? and assorted other bafflegab.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
Saabnet saved me about $1.5K on re-torquing the head bolts
instead of replacing the head gasket and valve sleeves. Itold
the dealer to order all the parts and then told them, after
I checked here, merely to re-torque the head bolts, which they
did and it completely cured the coolant leak
Your bottom line ought to be to have the vendor show either:
(a) your proposed car has the newer-style heater box OR
(b) you ask for about $750 off the purchase price to stow
away for its inevitable failure.
AND you should have them check the torque on the head bolts,
a 15 minute job.
