Bought a black 99 9-3 5spd 5dr for my son in June, 2002. First thing I did was upgrade rims and tires to 16" because I thought the 15" wheels looked too small for the body. I added rear mud guards, too.
At the time I was driving a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer and had been driving Mountaineers/Explorers for 10 years. Once I started teaching my son to drive a stick I realized how much fun it was to be in a car that had decent acceleration and could be thrown around a bit. (One can't throw around a Mountaineer/Explorer). The lease on that Mountaineer was up in May of 2003. Rather then get another, I went for an 03 Vector 6spd. The difference between the 03 and 99 was almost equal to the difference between the 99 and the 02 Mountaineer. I'm pretty happy with my Vector and will probably not return to SUV's when the current lease expires next summer. Can't say yet whether next car will be a Saab, but whatever I wind up with will be a stick and I live in NYC.
Interesting note: My son's high school graduating class was about 150 kids. On graduation day, only 2 kids knew how to drive a stick; my son and a young woman whose Dad only bought or leased manual transmission cars.
Happy motoring!
