How much gas do you have? In normal weather, my car takes longer (more cranks) to start with less than half a tank. Today, also in the northeast, my car started right up (2-3 cranks) with 3/4 tank, but I imagine it would have taken longer with less gas. I also have an aftermarket amp, but slightly less powerful.
Some people have said that leaving the key in "on" for a couple of seconds before starting pressurizes the fuel system and causes the engine to start with fewer cranks, but I'm leery of this in the cold and the effect that having the car in "on" (heater, blower, lights, fog lights, stereo, heated seats, etc.) has on the battery, even for a few seconds.
I've been starting the car up about 15 minutes before leaving every day that it's been this cold -- i also make sure that I shut off the stereo, seat heaters, and fog lights before shutting off the car at night so that it doesn't have to power them while it's warming up in the morning, and I put it on night panel right after starting so that the SID has time to warm up a little without the display and the car doesn't have to power all the dash lights. I know that's probably silly, but it makes me feel a little better about my car in that brutal cold.
About gas -- I had been feeding my car (1999 base engine) premium since I bought it, but it developed a rough idle. Someone suggested that I lower the octane a little, and the idle has smoothed a little. I don't know if it was a buildup of the some of the detergents found in some of the higher grades of gas or what -- and I don't know if it has anything to do with the starting time, either.
