Sorry for the mess. At least you are uninjured. The brakes and tires can only work with the friction that is available from the surface, even with anti-lock. Conditions sometimes can be beyond all help. But, the rule with anti-lock, as pointed out by Ian, is to stand on the brake pedal while the mechanism pulses the brakes and to simultaneously do your best to steer out of the problem. This Fall my anti-locks saved my car on a very slippery street in the rain. I missed a turn in the dark, after driving all day, and felt sure I was going to crash. 'Stood on the brakes and steered away as smoothly as I could. Darned if the car did not only both slow down and also nicely turned past the obstacle -- which obstacle I would have surely have hit in a straight line stop, even with the anti-locks going like crazy. I mark that incident up as an accident which the Saab engineers saved me from after I put us in a bad way. Second lesson for me was not to drive in the dark and rain when exhausted.
