With car audio, it is always best not to take the easy way. Running a direct RCA cable from the head unit to your sub is the best thing you can do (if that is possible). Since you are upgrading the sub, you should have already replaced the factory head unit. This not only will provide you with more power and less distortion (and thus better sound) but will provide you with a few RCA outs so you can run a sub.
As for the power cable, you need to make sure it is able to carry the power needed to the sub. You don't want power failure to the sub, or worse, damage your battery. Its best to run a direct power cable made for the application and use a fuse to prevent damage to your battery. Also, if you notice your lights dimming when the bass hits, you will need to purchase a capasitor.
