9-3 head gasket failure

I'd love some advice if anyone out there has been through this with a dealer or who can explain how oil leaks can disappear then reappear months later.
I have a 99 9-3 w/ 2.0 turbo engine, second owner, 46 k miles. Reported oil leakage in dec. '02, (puddles under the car), first "repair" at VOB saab in Rockville , MD was to replace the drain plug crush washer, didn't work. I inspected the engine before taking it back and saw oil sheeting down the front cover below the head gasket joint, informed them of that fact, they then replaced the front seal and the tim. chain tensioner and "tightened the front cover", the oil leak went away for approx. 9 months (no puddles) then three months after the warranty expired the leak comes back in the exact same location and now the dealer says it needs a head gasket and it will cost $1600. BTW, saab has offered a $300 credit for future service/parts.
VOB has responded to my concerns with denial that such a thing could have happened. The service manager and the factory rep told me that if the car had been leaking like that in dec. '02 they would have seen it and fixed it, so I guess that makes me a liar or at best prone to hallucinations. I know for sure that I will go over my 2k aero with a fine toothed comb before it goes out of warranty!
Any feedback or advice as to how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.
