A vehicle racking up highway miles will get more years out of shocks than other duties. I was a diehard in denial. I was well over 100K and noticed that there were steering artifacts from fast lane changes etc. Speculated that this was from body roll steering effects from the shocks, but could not detect any shock weakness with bounce tests etc. So I put on a SAS sway bar. So body roll and no steering artifacts. So I concluded that the shocks were the problem. But winter came on, not the time for such work. That winter, the suspension started to bottom out and hammer all of the time. Koni's that spring.
So, it is really hard to check the state of the shocks on some vehicles by rocking or bouncing. And such tests can create a false impression that the shocks are ok.
