At the Aero Academy one can see soot in the exhaust all of the time. We could see it best in the morning light, and we were behind the 9-5s launching for the emergency lane change drill.
But you do have a ping problem. The system may be running richer to fix that pinging problem. Some pings are not a problem I hear, but I never have had any. WHAT FUEL are you using? I am ping free on 92 octane.
I would pull the plugs for inspection; regap or replace. Clean injectors with Techron Cocnetrate as bad spray patterns might be part of the problem, and combustion chamber deposit hot spots might be too.
And perhaps the DI is malfunctioning.
So some soot is normal on boost, but the pinging is not.
If the system is not able to satisfy the O2 sensors when off boost, there would be a CEL in no time at all. So the idea that there is a gross leak in the turbo system does not make too much sense.
So do the Techron and check out the plugs after the Techron runs through. See were things are at then.
?Otherwise: starts ok, idles ok, power is fine, MPGs are fine?
You has a new air filter fitted at 30K?
