Convertible top motor failure, 6000$, is this normal?!

Hi folks!
My '99 9.3 SEC was in the shop last week, because the top wouldn't go down. The dealer took 2 hours to find out that the hydraulic motors were out of oil, then charged me 100$ for the stuff, just under 300$ total.
Well, left the dealer, top down, smilling anyway. 2 days later, when trying to put the top back up, just noise, no motion, the top would not move (didn't sound as if anything was straining or anything). Took it back to the dealer, who then said that a motor had burned out, (probably because of lack of hydraulic oil) and that a new one would be about 6000$, all in. Is this possible? Why would the motors have run dry? are they supposed to be checked out every now and then as part of reg. maintenance? Did they actually leak? I have no spots anywhere...
They called me back this morning, saying they found a used part, with 3 months warranty, for about 600$. I'm wondering if the other hydraulic motors would go on me after replacing this one...
What are your opinions, comments, recommendations?
Thanks a million, this is a wonderfull board!
Richard
