Call your insurance company about what happened and proceed with putting in a claim.
Tell your mechanic that you are doing this. See if he backs off. If it really is from sucking water in it should be covered by your full coverage policy (assuming you have full coverage).
A good friend of mine took his 3 week old Explorer "off the beaten path" and sucked water up into his engine many years ago. He hydro-locked his engine and it was toast. The truck was towed to a dealer & they were nice and washed the truck clean before the insurance company showed up.
Insurance Co. paid for a brand new engine to be installed (think it was something like $7000 after he paid his deductable) so it only cost him his $500 deductable. He learned a very valuable lesson that day.
Never follow a Jeep Wrangler through a very large "puddle". Jeeps are Jeeps, Explorers are glorified station wagons (not that there are anything wrong with them, they just aren't built for off-roading even though they look like they might be).
