Keep in mind that the replacement "all in one" key/fob actually has less range than the old two piece unit. There was a new receiver that came in cars with the new fob to extend the range back out to what the old one had. So, you might have to get that part as well, or live with even shorter key range.
At least, that was my understanding back in 2001 when the integrated unit came out. Maybe they've improved things since then.
As an interesting side note (or maybe not), the two piece key and fob were originally supposed to be one piece. The key was supposed to fold out of the fob with a little button a-la VW. During testing, they found that the fob acted like a giant handle and made it way too easy to accidently turn off the center mounted ignition while you were driving.
