I did Seth's version about a month or two ago and it worked great. The other day it started to crackle a little bit and has now lost the left channel.
I think that it was just due to some poor soldering on my part (also a first timer) and that a connection on the 1/8" jack is loose or broken. I used all the same parts as Seth.
I drilled the holes through the empty button trim piece using a 1/4" bit as suggested, but it was a little tight, I would reccommend either using a slightly bigger bit or using something like a dremel to widen the opening a little bit. I had trouble getting enough of the threading to come through to secure the washers on the outside of the switch and jack. I think my "brute-force" method is probably what led to the connection coming loose.
As mentioned, Seth was extremely helpful with the couple questions that I asked him. Good luck!
