I don't believe that reverse has sycro's, somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.
I consider it normal that a forward gear must be selected before going into reverse. As a matter of habit I always shift into 4th, then reverse.
Notchy shifting into other gears is a problem, and SAAB should damn near be sued for making such lousy gearboxes for so many years...
Constant gear oil changes seem to help, be it "old" synthetic, or the new MTF0063. I change mine every 30K
