With rear wheel drive cars, putting a par of snow tires only on the traction wheels in back was a reasonable compromise.
The same does not work on FWD cars, but people still do it. Putting two snow tires on the traction wheels of any car will help where you can't get going on snow and ice, getting out of a parking spot etc. However, it makes the car more likely to go into a spin while driving or turning on ice and snow, so it can actually be an unsafe thing to do. See comment about the arrow above.
