I haven't had that much trouble over 40 K miles since June of '01, but I have had more issues than with other cars I've owned. No top motor work has been needed. My SID has been replaced twice, the DI went out and stranded me at a store, the AC needed fixed the first week I owned it and they had to fix something to keep the horn from going off while driving, also during the first week. Recently, a cable broke on one of the seat tilt mechanism. Knock on wood, my HVAC knobs and pulleys haven't broken yet. Despite all of this, I love the car and my dealership service experiences have been nothing short of superb.
I just hope I have good luck out of warranty, and I remain curious about why these otherwise great cars have these kinds of flaws. 2001 was the third year for the model run, so none of these parts that are known to go bad way too soon should be in our cars, especially the DI that inevitably leaves you stranded. I told a BMW owner about my DI and explained that many people carry a spare. He just shook his head and laughed. A Civic owner simply stated, "who would ever accept that in an automobile.. it's ridiculous". Your particular vehicle probably should have been declared a lemon in many states
