Could be a heater box issue or just the connector

The knob that adjusts the direction of the air flow has a plastic linkage "arm" that connects it to the mechanism that turns the drum in the heater box. The snap you heard was probably that plastic linkage breaking. Now, as to the cause of it breaking, it could either be the plastic part developed a crack and just wore out and snapped. The other possible cause is that it broke due to the drum beginning to bind and not turn as easily as it should. This would put more stress on the linkage over time and eventually it would break. Did you notice it turning harder over the last few weeks?

The drum binding problem in the 1999 and 2000 9-3s with manual heater controls was due to a defect in the manufacture of the heater box. They used the wrong type of grease to lubricate the mechanism that would not stand up to the heat. Eventually the grease would break down and the drum would begin to bind. I believe there were also some tolerance problems with the drum that made it easier to bind and stick. This was corrected by the 2001 model year, but some 1999 and 2000 year 9-3s will develop this problem over time. Since yours is a 1999, though, if you had the wrong grease problem, it should have developed sooner than this.

If it is just the linkage arm for the knob, that will be an easier and less expensive repair than replacing the whole hater box drum assembly. The problem is the tehnician will have to disassemble the dash and center console to do the repair. It is labor intensive.
