This may be model specific and evolving over time, but what you have described is not how my 2004 Aero functions. I have had several situations where I locked the car with the remote, then returned and it wouldn't unlock. The 2004 fob has the key built in, which slides out of the fob, and then you can unlock the door with the key. The alarm goes off when the door is opened, and then you jump in and insert the fob to stop the alarm and start the car. It helps if you slide the key back into the fob before opening the door to get the alarm off ASAP! Never had a problem with the car not starting.
