If you are using a quality synthetic oil (Amsoil, Mobil 1, etc.), then 5,000-mile oil and filter changes for stop and go city-type driving and 10,000-mile oil and filter changes for highway only driving will be fine.
That information is based on a 4-qt oil system and a 2.0l turbo changed engine. I have used 5,000-mile oil and filter changes in all my Saabs and never had any oil related failure.
So far the 2005 9-3 Aero oil mangement system says the oil has 80% life left with 2000-miles driven. That would mean an the oil management system believes the oil should be changed at about 10,000-miles. Personally, I will have the oil changed at 50% life or 5,000-miles just to be safe. Even with a 6.5-qt oil system like in the new Ecotec derived engine, I feel that the 10,000-mile change is a bit long as the vehicle is only driven about 700-miles a month (10,000-miles would be over 14-months). Once a year or 7,500-miles would probably be fine for the way the 2005 9-3 Aero is being driven. However since I get free oil changes when the oil management system says it is time (10,000-miles), I will change the oil myself 50% life and let Saab pay for every other oil change.
