It is the version of the engine, more specifically the cylinder head. Horsepower ratings of the engine vary depending on engine version and model of car.
Depending on the car, the 204/234 was used until 2000, 205/235 1999 and later (there is some overlap depending on the car model).
There is discussion about which versions of the engine are more or less likely to have loose headbolts and fail, and whether Saab will pay for the resulting damage only on some engines and not on others. Saab would prefer to pay for only the engines that insurance companies in Europe will not cover because of the defect. Owners would prefer Saab to pay for all the loose headbolt problems going back to 1994, or at least 1997, and recall the cars so the hadbolts can be tightened and you don't have to worry about the engine failing.
