Can go either way. Coolant in the cylinders can get into the oil. Some report 'white clouds of smoke' with a cold engine. I would pull the plugs in the AM before starting and look into spark plug holes for coolant. If the pressurized oil leaks though the HG to the water jacked side of things, oil pressure exceeds the pressure in the cooling system. And if the coolant leaks and finds the zero pressure of an oil drain passage, then the leak is the other way. So both types are seen. And combustion gases past the HG seal rings can put exhaust and soot into the coolant.
So fluids can mix when the HG does not do its job, and the HG gasket problems seem to be caused strickly by loose head bolts. Some HGs may fail when the bolts were loose then tightened. So perhaps a used vehicle might exibit a failing HG and the bolts would then appear to be properly tight.
