Tire Crisis-Stupid Teenager -Help. (Long)

Hi all. I need some serious help.
I have a '99 9-3SE 75k -amazing condition (other than these tires).
I bought it used in summer '03 in Florida with summer performance tires.
Brought it up to MA and that winter and I discovered pretty quickly that I needed snow tires.
I spent some fairly serious money (to me at least) and bought four BFGOODRICH Traction T/A snow tires. They worked pretty well that winter. The tire shop told me I could leave them on all year without any problem -wrong. I did rotate and balance them every 5k.
We've just had a blizzard up here in Boston and today I blew out a rear tire which has had a slow leak for some time. The tow truck guy who put the spare on asked if I was crazy driving around with tires that were so worn.I had noticed it wasn't doing to well in the snow but I thought I couldn't need new tires so soon.
Obviously I need new ones - but I have no idea what to buy that will last.
Questions:
*Any recommendations for good quality tires? - I'm willing to pay a decent amount.
*Do I need to buy four snow tires if only the front wheels do the driving?
*Are there good snow tires I can leave on all year? - I don't care about the noise and I rarely, if ever, go over 90MPH - and I like the look.
*Any special balance/rotation sechedule?
*Is there anything else that I need to know about this?
Thanks.
