<Saabs answer to engine problems. 8 year retroactive warranty.
A retroactive warranty for 8 years is the answer on the engine problem that was revealed just about a week ago.
We are actively trying to search and find each owner that has been already affected by this and pay back every penny, says Örjan Åslund at Saab when asked by Expressen.
It started with the insurance company Trygg-Hansa who refused to pay out any more money to Saab owners whose engines had seized up, this decision came because of the big amount of destroyed Saab engines on these Saab models compared to other brands. When The Daily News revealed this heap of “dirty laundry” about a week ago, Saab had already started to look into the matter and what to do about it, says Örjan Åslund, information chief at Saab Sweden when asked by Expressen.se.
On Thursday the solution was revealed, that is going to be so expensive that General Motors had to give its approval.
We are introducing a retroactive warranty that covers the first 8 years from date of registration says Örjan Åslund.
Car owners that, let’s say, spent $2200.00 in repairs 4 years ago are going to be looked for and found and paid back every penny. That means that a car that has maybe reached 155000 miles or more is going to get a new warranty.
The problem lies in the engine lubrication system. If the car is driven to short of a stretch and never gets a chance to really warm up, the quality of the oil can deteriorate to the point that it create a seized engine.
But it is about 4 cars in every hundred produced, says Örjan Åslund. It is not that each and every other car is affected, as you might think when this story broke.
Örjan Åslund feels that the offer from Saab is very generous.
We produce premium cars and therefore want to take care of any problems in a premium way.
If any owners is the least worried they should contact closest Saab dealer or repair shop, it is fairly easy to determine if the car has a problem or not, related to this issue, says Örjan Åslund.>
